Thera App Concept
Research, UX/UI Design, Brand Identity, User Testing
Finding a therapist can be completely overwhelming. It’s hard to feel taken care of when you’re wading through a sea of websites and options. All this, at a very vulnerable time, is enough for some who need therapy to call it quits before even getting started.
I developed an end-to-end app concept that acts as a matchmaker for therapists and potential clients. Think Bumble, but for therapy.
Research
Through competitive analysis, interviews, and empathy mapping, I uncovered insights that drove the persona for this project.
Those who were comfortable finding a therapist had recommendations directly from friends/family or another professional.
All participants who had seen a therapist before had seen more than 1 therapist in their lifetime, with the average being between 4 and 5.
Participants who are searching have been searching for 3 to 12 months.
Mental health stigmas prevented participants from getting the full support they needed during their therapist search.
Therapists want to screen their own patients when they call for an appointment.
Money is a large source of stress when looking for a therapist.
Both in-person and online therapy should be considered.
Interview Quotes
“Just talking myself into being able to do it is hard. I emailed one, half pouring my heart out to her just to find out that her email went to her secretary. I was contacted after a couple of weeks and told their office was booked. No appointment was made.”
— Mallary, Client Interview Participant
“I want to personally answer their questions so they can feel less nervous coming in.”
— J.S., Therapist Interview Participant
Interaction
I started problem-solving based on the research by developing a sitemap and thinking through user flows. From there, I created annotated wireframes to show the value and function of each piece of UI in the app.
One main consideration is the need for a client portal and a therapist portal.
Interface Design
The Thera concept is fleshed out through brand identity and key screen design.
Testing & Iteration
I worked with users in-person to walk through a high-fidelity InVision prototype of the Thera app. By understanding the successes and patterns, I was able to create a path forward using an affinity map for improvements.
“This bridges the gap between ‘I’m curious’ to ‘I’m booking’ without the stress.”
— Sarah, Usability Testing Participant
